An Ottumwa Fire Department Captain who was fired last year by the city will be returning to work.
Public Information Officer Travis Lawrence confirmed to Ottumwa Radio News that Bill Keith will be back on the job Friday morning.
Keith was fired last July after an investigation. At the time, the city of Ottumwa said Keith was terminated for a “failure to adequately lead those under his command and displaying an attitude of indifference toward holding employees accountable to the values and standards of the department and the city of Ottumwa.”
The city says the investigation revealed misconduct revolving around firefighters engaging in sexual activity at a fire station while on duty. Firefighter Derek Fye was terminated after the investigation and Dillon McPherson resigned in place of termination.
Keith appealed his termination and at a hearing held in City Hall last October before the Civil Service Commission, Keith said he did not know about any sexual misconduct that occurred under his command.
