The Ottumwa Community School District announced a pair of groundbreaking ceremonies for its newest addition to the activities facilities – state-of-the-art tennis courts and a competition gym.

The tennis courts are a City of Ottumwa, Friends of Ottumwa Parks, and Ottumwa Community School District-funded project to bring tennis courts to our community and students. This development is part of the district’s “Be the Best” initiative aimed at providing top-notch resources and opportunities for students.

The groundbreaking ceremony is scheduled for January 8, 2024, at 4:00 p.m. at the site of the tennis courts, and 4:30 p.m. at the site of the competition gymnasium. The event will be attended by school officials, community leaders, athletes, and supporters of the district.

The new facilities are poised to elevate the athletic experience for our students and the community, according to the district. The tennis courts and competition gym represent our commitment to fostering excellence in sports while nurturing the talents and aspirations of our young athletes.

Superintendent Mike McGrory offered his thoughts about the forthcoming facilities, stating, “The ‘Be the Best’ initiative stands as a testament to our dedication to providing our students with top-tier opportunities. These new tennis courts and competition gymnasium will not only enhance our athletic programs but also contribute significantly to the comprehensive development of our students.”

The district says the ceremony marks the beginning of another exciting phase for Ottumwa Schools, underscoring its commitment to creating an environment where students can thrive.
