Elizabeth DeJong


Elizabeth DeJong, 94, of Oskaloosa, passed away Sunday evening, January 21, 2024, at the Oskaloosa Care Center.

Elizabeth Bernice DeJong, daughter of Ben and Dora (Roorda) Groenendyk, was born December 12, 1929, in Oskaloosa. She graduated from Cedar High School in 1948 and lived most of her life in the Eddyville area, where her husband Henry, and she farmed until retirement in 1998. Elizabeth was a busy farm wife and mother, maintained a large garden, and was known for her homemade bread. Together, they enjoyed some traveling, which included a trip to Holland. They moved to Oskaloosa in 1998. Henry passed away in 2001.

Elizabeth was a member of the First Christian Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. She was also a member of the Pleasant Corners Ladies Aid. She enjoyed embroidery and received several blue ribbons at the Southern Iowa Fair. While living the last several years at Oskaloosa Care Center, she enjoyed visiting with family and friends, watching church services online, playing bingo, and engaging in other activities.

Elizabeth’s memory is honored by her two sons and their wives, Lee and Cathy DeJong of Fort Dodge, Iowa, and Wayne and Teresa DeJong of Bartlett, Illinois, and a daughter, Elaine Knight of Oskaloosa. She was blessed with seven grandchildren: Olivia, Howard, Henry, Allyson (Brian), David (Kate), Amy, and Jonathan (Andrea), and six great-grandchildren: Mina, Charlotte, Simon, Addy, Gennie, and Eliza. A brother, Marion Groenendyk of Wyoming, Michigan, also survives her.

In addition to her parents and her husband, Elizabeth was preceded by a daughter, Carolyn DeJong; a son-in-law, Terry Knight; a sister and brother-in-law, Joanna and William Van Weelden, and sisters-in-law, Thelma and Jeanette Groenendyk.

Funeral services for Elizabeth will be held Thursday, January 25, 2024, at 10:30 a.m., at the First Christian Reformed Church with Rev. Jonathan Spronk officiating. Burial will be in Pleasant Corners Cemetery near Eddyville. The family will greet visitors at the church from 9 a.m. to service time on Thursday morning. A family prayer service will be held at 10:15 in the fellowship hall. Memorial Contributions can be made to the First Christian Reformed Youth Group. Langkamp Funeral Chapel has been entrusted with Elizabeth’s arrangements.
