Gennevieve Chilcote

Gennevieve Chilcote, 92, of Oskaloosa, passed away Wednesday, August 9, 2023, at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa.

Leta Gennevieve Chilcote, daughter of Cloyd & Lillie Spaur Winegardner, was born January 28, 1931, near Oskaloosa, Iowa. Gennevieve attended Union School in Jefferson Township. Following her education, she worked on her family’s farm. She married Lewis Edward Chilcote on November 1, 1962, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. Gennevieve and Lewis worked alongside each other, making their family farm successful. She helped in everything but planting the corn and operating the combine. After they sold the family farm, Gennevieve worked for Mahaska Bottling Company for 24 years on the assembly line. She retired in 1995.

Gennevieve enjoyed vegetable and flower gardening, baking, coffee time, and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Her lemon meringue pie was a family favorite. Crystal Heights Care Center became her home in 2016. Gennevieve never had any children of her own, but in the last years of her life, many lovingly referred to her as “momma.”

Gennevieve’s family includes a step-son, Lysle Chilcote of Oskaloosa; a step-daughter, Carol Heilman of Tulsa, OK; three grandchildren: Jason (Rosalyn) Heilman of Broken Arrow, OK; Angela Rexroth of Des Moines, IA and Robyn (Jeff) Hoppman of Riverside, IA; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, Gennevieve was preceded in death by her husband Lewis, an infant sister, Vera Maxine, a daughter-in-law, Margaret Chilcote, a son-in-law, Stephen Heilman, a granddaughter, Mariann Asher, and a sister and brother-in-law, Lucille and Vernon Hoyt.

Funeral Services for Gennevieve will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel, with Pastor Rodney DeRonde of Fellowship Bible Church officiating. Burial will be in Forest Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m., Tuesday; the family will greet visitors from 5-7 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to the Mahaska Health Foundation for the Hospice Serenity House.
