Dwight “Tweet” Fryer, 97, of Oskaloosa, died Tuesday morning, June 20, 2023, at the Oskaloosa Care Center.
Dwight Everett Fryer, Jr., son of Dwight Everett Sr. and Cora May (Redding) Fryer, was born March 29, 1926, in Tracy, Iowa. While attending Tracy High School, he played on the basketball team and still, as a grandpa, could outshoot his grandchildren. His first job was as a traveling high-rise steelworker; many buildings he helped construct still stand in some of Iowa’s larger cities.
Dwight married Phyllis Jean Cameron on August 14, 1949, in Oskaloosa, and they settled on a farm south of Oskaloosa. He continued with his construction career for a short time but soon began operating bulldozers. In addition to running a large farm with livestock, Dwight worked for Carlos Converse, operating bulldozers all over southern Iowa. After Carlos passed away, Dwight continued to run for the Ver Steegh Brothers and, even at age 94, still enjoyed bulldozing on the farm.
Dwight was baptized in July of 1972 as one of Jehovah’s Witnesses. He enjoyed sharing the Bible’s promises with everyone he met. Dwight enjoyed fishing trips and even a cruise with his family well into his 90s. Dwight stayed in his home with the help of his family until April of this year, when he moved to Oskaloosa Care Center.
His family includes his children: Danny (Diane) Fryer of Oskaloosa, Robyn (Randy) Sayre of Oskaloosa, and son-in-law, Ronald Rohlfsen of West Plains, MO; his five grandchildren: Bryan (Mandi) Rohlfsen of West Plaines, MO, Jennifer (Paul) Resczenko of Oskaloosa, Curtis (Erin) Rohlfsen of Wallkill, NY, Joshua (Heather) Fryer of Oskaloosa, and Kara (Jonathan) Vance of Oskaloosa; a brother-in-law, Mike Cameron of Oskaloosa; and a nephew, Billy (Carol) Sarver of Ellicott, MD.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Phyllis, on December 22, 2018, his daughter, Vicky Rohlfsen, and sister, Vera Sarver Leeper, and an infant sister, Wilma Fryer.
Private graveside funeral services for Dwight will be held at Bellefountaine Cemetery near Tracy, Iowa. A memorial service will be at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, July 8, 2023, at the Kingdom Hall of the Jehovah’s Witnesses, 1712 South Market, with Sam Brown officiating. The family will be present at 10:00 a.m. to greet friends and relatives.
