Ottumwa police say a man lied about a bank deposit and spent the stolen money.
29-year-old Erik Ortiz has been charged with second-degree theft, a Class D felony.
Court records say on March 3 shortly before midnight, Ortiz deposited $12 at an ATM at River Community Credit Union but entered his deposit as $4,600 on the keypad. Ortiz then spent the stolen funds over the course of three days.
A warrant for Ortiz’s arrest was issued on March 21 and he was taken into custody on May 8.
Ortiz is currently in the Wapello County Jail on a $5,000 bond. He has a preliminary hearing scheduled for May 15.
