A former Moravia teacher was arrested Wednesday after authorities say she assaulted a preschool student earlier this month.

46-year-old Erin Michelle Aalfs has been charged with two counts of simple assault and one count of interference with official acts.

While employed as a preschool teacher at the Moravia Community School District, the Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office says Aalfs kicked and threw rocks at a preschool student. Aalfs also allegedly picked up the student and tossed the victim towards a chain link fence which caused the student to hit the ground and fence. Authorities say the disturbance occurred on March 10th at the playgrounds of Moravia Elementary School during school hours. The student was not injured.

The sheriff’s office says Aalfs was in her second year as a preschool teacher. She resigned from her position sometime after the incident on March 10th.

During her arrest on Wednesday at her home, Aalfs allegedly resisted arrest which resulted in a deputy suffering minor injuries.

Aalfs was transported to the Appanoose County Jail where she was held on a $1,600 bond as of Wednesday night.
