Stanley Ovid Kirby, 76, of Oskaloosa died Friday, December 30, 2022, at St. Luke’s Hospital in Tempe, Arizona. He was born November 4, 1946, in Mahaska County, the son of Ovid Orlando and Verda Ellen Masterson Kirby. He graduated from Oskaloosa High School with the class of 1965. On August 1, 1965, Stan was united in marriage to Carolyn Brown in What Cheer, Iowa. Stan worked for Hy-Vee grocery stores for over 38 years. He served as the store director in Oskaloosa until his retirement in 2001. Stan had a passion for friendly competition and loved to play card games, golf, drive legend race cars, and tournament bass fish. He enjoyed traveling with Carolyn and his family and especially enjoyed trips to Mexico, Hawaii, and cruising. He looked forward to fishing trips in Canada with his buddies. Stan and Carolyn enjoyed winters in Arizona for the past 21 years. He always looked forward to heading south for the winter and reconnecting with his Arizona friends. He was a member of Mahaska Masonic Lodge.

His family includes his wife of over 57 years, Carolyn Kirby of Oskaloosa; two children, Brian (Denise) Kirby of Mt. Pleasant and Lynette Crawford of Oskaloosa; four grandchildren, Spencer Kirby, Kasey Kirby, Taylor (Christian) Septer, and Baylee Crawford; great granddaughters, Izabella Kirby and Isla Kirby and one on the way; a brother, Dennis Kirby of Oskaloosa; five sisters, Sue (Gary) Gerard of Oskaloosa, Roxanne (Dave) Bahnsen of Coralville, Tammy Sparks of Oskaloosa, Jody (Randy) Hunt of Oskaloosa, and Lisa Evans of Oskaloosa; and many nieces and nephews.

Stan was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Randy Kirby; and a niece, Jen Kokke.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, January 7, 2023, at 10:30 AM, in the Bates Funeral Chapel with Pastor Alvern Boetsma officiating. Burial will follow services in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements. Visitation will be held on Friday, January 6, 2023, beginning after 12 noon at the Bates Funeral Chapel with the family present from 5-7 p.m. to greet relatives and friends with a Masonic service starting at 7:00 p.m. Memorial may be to the Myocytes Foundation.
