An Ottumwa man was arrested after police say he intentionally hit a pedestrian with his vehicle.
23-year-old Carlens Michaud has been charged with willful injury (Class D felony), leaving scene of accident (serious misdemeanor), and possession of marijuana (serious misdemeanor).
Ottumwa police say Michaud and an individual were engaged in a verbal argument shortly after midnight at the 600 block of South Iowa Avenue on September 24th.
According to court records, numerous witnesses observed Michaud striking the victim, who was on foot, with his vehicle. Michaud left the scene without contacting the police or hospital for medical assistance. Michaud later admitted to hitting the person with his car to police.
Michaud was stopped by police shortly after the incident. Upon contact, officers noticed the smell of marijuana coming from the vehicle. After a probably cause search, 1.2 grams of marijuana was found inside the vehicle.
Michaud was transported to the Wapello County Jail. He was later freed after posting a $7,000 bond.
Michaud’s preliminary hearing is scheduled for October 3rd. He entered a plea of not guilty.
