George E. “Lad” Short, 92, of Ottumwa, died at 3:45 p.m. June 21, 2022 at Good Samaritan Society-Ottumwa.
Lad was born March 5, 1930 at home in Ottumwa to George and Hattie Eaves Short. He married Karen Charlene Nelson on January 29, 1959.
A graduate of Ottumwa High School, he served two years in the U.S. Army. Lad managed several stations for Elliott Oil, most notably George’s Fina in the west end of Ottumwa.
He was a member of Faith Christian Outreach Church. Lad loved to fish, play basketball and volleyball and was an avid Iowa Hawkeye fan. He enjoyed attending the Iowa State Fair.
Lad was an honest, loving, hardworking man who loved life and especially loved spending time with his granddaughters.
He is survived by his wife of 63 years, Karen; their son, Joe (Sara) Short of Mount Pleasant; two granddaughters, Allison (Josh) Cody of Overland Park, KS and Aimee Short of Springfield, MO; three great-grandchildren, Cade, Maddex and Gracyn.
He was preceded in death by his parents; six sisters, Beatrice Schultz, Mary Davis, Dorothy Jones, Patty Short, Lois Brewer, Dixie Miller; and four brothers, Donald Short, Jack Short, Robert Short and Tommy Joe Short.
Graveside services and burial will be 11 a.m. Friday, June 24th at Agency Cemetery with Fred Carlo officiating. Military honors will be conducted by Walter B. Schafer Post #775 Veterans of Foreign Wars and O.B. Nelson Post #3 American Legion. For those unable to attend, the service may be viewed on the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice Serving Davis and Wapello Counties.
