A fisherman’s body was discovered at Rathbun Lake Friday afternoon.
The Appanoose County Sheriff’s Office says two local men at the South Fork Bridge saw a male floating 15 feet from the shore. The men removed the body from the water and called 911.
The deceased was an 84-year-old area fisherman. Authorities are not releasing his identity pending notification of his family.
The preliminary investigation indicates the gentleman backed his pickup to the boat ramp and launched a small fishing boat. The boat floated approximately 100 yards across the cove. The pickup was still running when authorities found it.
The fisherman was wearing a jacket when his body was found. He was in three feet of water. Law enforcement say there was no evidence of foul play and there was no obvious visible trauma on the body.
The body will be transported to the Iowa State Medical Examiner’s office to assist in determining manner and cause of death.
