Area Welding Students Take First Place in Competition

Indian Hills Community College (IHCC)/Cardinal Area Welding Academy students took first place in the boys and girls divisions of the Plumber and Steamfitters Local 33’s annual High School Weld Off competition held last week.

The Academy consists of students from Indian Hills and the Cardinal, Fairfield, and Van Buren County school districts.

Cardinal students Grace Eakins, Allison Sloan, and Allee Black placed first, second and third respectively in the girls’ division.

In the boys’ division, Cardinal students Griffin Greiner, Chandler Pumphrey, Matt Streeby, Darrin Coffman, Gavin Warner, Konnor Sanders, and Brayden McDonough placed first, second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth, and eighth respectively.

IHCC Welding Instructor Andy Brainard was pleased with the performance of his students.

According to the Cardinal Community School District, the welding program gives high school juniors and seniors a head start in their college education as they complete Indian Hills’ Welding Diploma program. Students in the program graduate high school with the skills necessary to become welders. They may also continue their education at IHCC to complete an A.A.S. degree.
