Steven Gardner, 61, of Ottumwa, died October 2, 2020 at his home.
He was born January 14, 1959 in Ottumwa to Gene and Virginia McWilliams Gardner. He married Kathy Jaske June 29, 1984.
A 1977 graduate of Ottumwa High School, he graduated from the University of Iowa and Drake University Law School in 1984. As an attorney, he practiced in Ottumwa his entire career, retiring from Denefe, Gardner & Zingg P.C. in 2019.
He was a member of the Iowa Bar Association and the Iowa Association of Justice where he had served on the board of directors. He also served on the board for the Salvation Army in Ottumwa for many years.
Steve enjoyed golfing and fishing, especially annual trips to Canada and Lake Thunderhead. He coached his kids’ youth basketball teams and mock trial team.
Surviving is his wife, Kathy; their three children, Lindsay (Chad) Carlson of Ottumwa, Corbin (Grace) Gardner of Des Moines and Jacob Gardner (Cara Sondrol) of Ames; his mother, Ginny Gardner of Ottumwa; a sister, Jennifer (Keith) Smith of Warrenton, MO; and a brother, Greg (Linda) Gardner of Ottumwa.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gene.
Limited open visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, October 9th at Reece Funeral Home. His family will be present to greet friends from 3 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. Those attending are asked to wear masks, or an appropriate face covering and adhere to the current social distancing guidelines.
Private funeral services will be 5 p.m. Friday, October 9th at the funeral home. For those not able to attend the service, you may watch the service live from the Reece Funeral Home Facebook page. Cremation will follow the service.
