Craig Voss

Craig T. Voss, 68, of Ottumwa died September 2, 2021.

He was born August 17, 1953 in Ottumwa to Bobby Dean and Betty Lou Voss. Craig married Patricia Ann Cassatt on June 30, 1973. The two met at Horace Mann – each other’s first kiss under the big tree on the playground – and reconnected after high school.

A 1971 graduate of Ottumwa High School, Craig worked at the family rental business, in construction and for a short time at IBP. In 1990, Craig took over Voss Equipment Rental, which he operated until his passing. Over the years, he rented cars, tables and chairs, equipment, and U-Haul trucks. He was a member of the National Rental Association, Hawkeye Rental Association and worked to help protect the private rental businesses, speaking in Washington D.C. in 1994. He was dedicated to his work and to his customers.

Craig is survived by his wife, Patty; their children, Matthew (Christine) Voss of Ottumwa and Tara Voss of Fullerton, CA; 4 grandchildren, Brenna, Ryan, Morgan and Makala; a great-grandson, Malachi; sister, Debbie (Mike) Jewell of Washington, IA and his father-in-law, Kenneth Cassatt. Craig loved his family without condition, was quick to forgive and hesitant to judge. He found companionship with his four-legged side-kick Coco. The two were inseparable and you could often see Coco’s head on Craig’s shoulder on their drive to work.

Craig had an intense desire to learn and was a veracious reader. He enjoyed the tales of Louis L’Amour, ancient Buddhist texts, journals on health and wellness, and even studied how to grow hydroponic tomatoes. He shared all that he learned with customers, friends and family.

He was a perfectly imperfect man who was loved deeply by many and who left us far too soon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his mother-in-law, Maxine Cassatt and his dog, Coco.

Visitation will be open at 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 7th at Reece Funeral Home with the family present to greet friends from 5-7 p.m. Tuesday. Cremation will follow the visitation.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made in Craig’s name to Heartland Humane Society or a charity of your choice.
