After nearly three decades, a suspect is now in custody in a central Iowa vehicular homicide case.
Des Moines police say 64-year-old Leslie Ruby died just outside his eastside home in a hit-and-run crash on September 29th of 1997.
Officers found the vehicle and evidence identified the driver as then 28-year-old Gerardo Garcia-Michel, who’d fled the state.
The case was featured on the popular television show, “America’s Most Wanted,” the following year, but didn’t uncover the suspect’s whereabouts.
That same episode was rerun almost 29 years later and prompted a tip that led authorities to Garcia-Michel in Ocean County, New Jersey.
U.S. Marshals took him into custody in late August and he’s now being held in New Jersey until he’s extradited to Iowa.
