Iowans who need help paying their home heating bills this winter will soon be able to apply for assistance through the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program, or LIHEAP.
Applications will open in October for households with at least one member who is 60 years of age or older, as well as households with a member who has a disability.
Applications for all other households will begin being accepted November 1st.
LIHEAP assistance is available to both homeowners and renters who meet the program’s income guidelines. Applications are processed on a first-come, first-served basis.
The federally funded program, administered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, helps eligible households with their home energy costs.
For the 2026-2027 program year, a household must meet the income requirements, which are based on 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines. For a family of four, the annual gross income limit is $64,300.
