When you think of Dolly Parton, you might think of her famous songs, her big personality, and her unmistakable voice. But did you know this country music legend has a history right here in Iowa?
Dolly Parton performed at the Iowa State Fair in 1970, appearing with Porter Wagoner, Faron Young, and the Deputies. At that time, she was still working alongside Porter Wagoner as she continued building her country music career.
Six years later, on April 30, 1976, Dolly made her way to Webster City, Iowa. She performed two shows at Iowa Central Community College’s Washington Central Gym as part of a fundraiser to support college scholarships.
According to a historical account published by The Messenger, nearly 3,200 people attended the two performances. Tickets were four dollars in advance and five dollars at the door.
The event organizers remembered how the stage was set up in the center of the gym so everyone could enjoy the show. Dolly performed with her Traveling Family band, and the audience was treated to an hour and a half of music.
What makes this story even more interesting is that the concert was about more than entertainment. It was also about helping students. The money raised supported scholarships for young people in the Webster City community.
Dolly returned to the Iowa State Fair on August 18, 1977. This time, she performed as a solo artist with her eight-piece band, Gypsy Fever. She sang some of her well-known songs, including “Jolene,” “Tennessee Mountain Home,” and “Coat of Many Colors.”

She returned to the Iowa State Fair again in 1982, showing that her connection to Iowa continued as her career grew.
