Pioneer Ridge Hosts Spooky Trail Adventure

Families looking for a fun way to celebrate the Halloween season can head to Pioneer Ridge Nature Area October 23 and 24 for an educational adventure on the trails.

This year’s event will focus on Iowa animals with bad reputations, giving visitors a chance to learn more about some of the state’s most misunderstood creatures.

Guided hikes will take place along the Nature Center’s half-mile paved trail. Hikes will leave the Nature Center every 10 minutes, so participants are asked to arrive a few minutes before their scheduled hike time.

The fun continues after the hike. Visitors can warm up with a hot chocolate bar inside the Nature Center before climbing aboard a tractor for a ride to the campground, where children can take part in Camper Trick-or-Treat.

The cost is $4 for those who pre-register, or $5 at the door. Children ages 3 and under can attend for free. Organizers say same-day spots are not guaranteed, so families are encouraged to register ahead of time.

Registration is available through MyCountyParks.com. Under the Events section, select Wapello County and choose the preferred hike time.

Pioneer Ridge Nature Area is located at 1339 U.S. Highway 63 near Bloomfield.
