A Clinton, Iowa, girl whose courage and determination inspired her family and medical team will be remembered Saturday, November 7, as the University of Iowa Hawkeyes honor her as an Honorary Kid Captain.

Eleanor “Ellie” Walker was selected as a member of the 2026 Kid Captain class before passing away from an aggressive form of brain cancer on July 6. She would have celebrated her fifth birthday in August.

Ellie began experiencing persistent headaches and vomiting at age 3. After testing at a local hospital revealed a mass in her brain, she was transferred to University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital, where she was diagnosed with stage 4 pineoblastoma, an extremely rare and aggressive cancer that originates in the pineal gland. Fewer than 100 cases are diagnosed in the United States each year. In Ellie’s case, the cancer had also spread to her spine.

Her treatment included a 13-hour surgery, 30 rounds of proton radiation, six cycles of chemotherapy, and numerous hospital stays and procedures. After more than a year of treatment, Ellie celebrated the end of her cancer treatment in April 2026 and was later considered to be in remission.

However, the cancer returned aggressively in early summer, spreading throughout her brain and spine. Despite additional treatments and the efforts of her medical team, the disease continued to progress. Ellie passed away peacefully on July 6, surrounded by her family.

Her parents, Max and Miranda Walker, remember Ellie as a bright light who could warm any room with her smile. Known for her fiery red hair, gentle heart, and spirited personality, she brought joy to everyone around her.

Ellie loved Disney princesses, especially Ariel and Merida, building sandcastles on the beaches of Destin, Florida, and spending time with her family. Her big brother, Theo, was her best friend.

Throughout her medical journey, Ellie continued to show remarkable courage. She often told those around her, “I’m going to be brave like Merida,” inspiring the doctors, nurses, and caregivers who became like family to the Walkers.

One of Ellie’s final special moments came on July 4, when she was surrounded by family on the 11th floor of Stead Family Children’s Hospital and experienced one last Hawkeye Wave from outside Kinnick Stadium.

Ellie will be honored during the Hawkeyes’ November 7 football game against Northwestern as an Honorary Kid Captain, ensuring her story remains part of the 2026 Kid Captain class.

Now in its 17th season, the Kid Captain program is a partnership between University of Iowa Health Care Stead Family Children’s Hospital and the Iowa Hawkeyes. The program recognizes pediatric patients and celebrates their inspiring stories, strength, and health care journeys.

Although Ellie’s life lasted less than five years, her impact continues to reach far beyond her age.

Her family says sharing her story gives them an opportunity to celebrate the courage, joy, and strength Ellie brought to so many people.
