An Ottumwa woman was arrested after allegedly stealing over $300 worth of merchandise from a local retail store.

Amy Caldwell, 49, was charged with fourth-degree theft, a serious misdemeanor.

On August 31st at approximately 4:00 PM, Caldwell was allegedly seen by Wal-Mart security scanning items in the self-checkout lane but failing to scan several other items. Court records say Caldwell then tried to leave the store without paying for the merchandise.

Officers from the Ottumwa Police Department were informed that Caldwell was previously captured on camera committing thefts over the last month, according to court documents. The sum of all of the alleged thefts was $302.64.

Caldwell was arrested and transported to the Wapello County Jail and was later freed after posting bond.

Caldwell’s initial court appearance is scheduled for September 3rd.
