Mary Elaine Cavner-Smith, 88, of Fairfield, Iowa, passed away early Thursday, August 27, 2026, at her daughter’s home in Richland, Iowa. Her life will be celebrated with an open house on Sunday, September 20, 2026, from 12:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the Lake Darling Lodge. Memorials in Mary’s honor may be made to Compassus Washington County Hospice and may be left at the celebration of life or mailed to the family at P.O. Box 107, Richland, Iowa 52585. Born on April 3, 1938, in Iowa City, Iowa, Mary was the daughter of Jesse Lynn and Florence Louise Daugherty-Sierp. She grew up in Hopkins, Missouri, where she graduated from Hopkins High School in 1956. That same year marked the beginning of a lifetime centered around family when she married Caryl Dale Cavner, Sr. on September 30, 1955, in Forest City, Missouri. Together they built a life that took them through Adel, Waukee, Monroe, Martinsburg, and Richland, with winters spent in Texas and many memories made along the way.
Mary devoted herself first to raising her children, and she brought the same care and creativity to her work as a seamstress. Later, she became the business owner of MC’s Country Shed in Martinsburg, Iowa, where her hardworking spirit and love of connecting with others continued to shine. She was a member of Eastern Star, Women’s Club, and Rubio Women’s Club, and she was known as an avid card player who enjoyed the fellowship, laughter, and friendly competition that came with every game.
After Caryl’s passing, Mary found companionship again when she married Marlin Vernon Smith of Birmingham, Iowa, in 2016. The two later moved from Marlin’s farm to Fairfield, Iowa, where Mary continued to carry with her the love of family, community, and simple joys that had shaped her life.
Mary is survived by her husband, Marlin Smith of Fairfield; her three children, Caryl Cavner, Jr.(Loriann) of Richland, Marsha Cook of Longmont, Colorado, and Brenda Wolcott of Richland; seven grandchildren, Sarah Aistrope, Jeb Wolcott, Karree Ann Wolcott, Bridger Wolcott, Clay Branch, Cole Cook, and Melissa Ellis; five great-grandchildren, Brookelyn, Harper, Raylee, Hayden, Ruthie, and Mila; and her brother, Roger Sierp of Maryville, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters, Barbara Godsey and Donna Sue Sierp.
Mary’s story is one of devotion, resilience, and the quiet strength found in a life lovingly shared with family and friends. Those who knew her will remember the many homes she made welcoming, the hands that created and cared, and the joy she found in gathering with others.
