The National Weather Service in Des Moines is warning Iowans to prepare for several rounds of thunderstorms that could bring severe weather and additional heavy rainfall through the weekend.
According to the latest NWS briefing, storms are expected early Thursday morning, with additional rounds possible Thursday night into Friday morning and again Saturday morning.
Some of the storms could become severe, producing damaging winds, large hail, heavy rainfall and an isolated tornado or two. The threat extends across much of Iowa.
A Flood Watch is also in effect through Friday afternoon for much of central Iowa, including Wapello County and Ottumwa.
The National Weather Service says repeated rounds of rain could lead to rapid rainfall accumulation, particularly where storms track over the same areas. Rainfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are possible, increasing the potential for flash flooding.
Excessive runoff could cause flooding along rivers, creeks and streams, as well as in low-lying, flood-prone, poor-drainage and urban areas.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts and be prepared to take action if Flash Flood Warnings are issued. Never drive through a flooded roadway.
