An eastern Iowa corn farmer says his crop is in great shape as the growing season heads into its final stretch.
“Do I think we have a record crop? No. But I think we’ve got a pretty dang good one.”
Lance Lillbridge of Vinton says his area has benefited from timely rains.
“I think we’re 13 inches over average,” he said. “We’re sitting pretty good. The tank is full when it comes to water.”
He tells Brownfield disease pressure has been minimal.
“We sprayed fungicide here about two weeks ago and very little to no disease,” he said. “That’s also a good time to get it on so that we prevent any disease as well.”
Monday’s USDA Crop Progress report said 78% of Iowa’s corn crop is in good to excellent condition. Twelve percent of the crop has dented, 69% is in the dough stage, and 97% is silking.
Iowa’s soybean crop is rated 77% good to excellent. Seventy-two percent is setting pods and 93% is blooming.
