Customers of UScellular continue to transition to T-Mobile following the company’s acquisition of UScellular’s wireless operations. The acquisition officially closed in August 2025 and is being implemented in phases across the country.
The transaction was an acquisition rather than a merger, with T-Mobile purchasing UScellular’s wireless business, including its customers, retail stores, and portions of its network infrastructure. As a result, UScellular no longer operates as an independent wireless carrier.
As part of the transition, the UScellular store in Ottumwa has closed. Former UScellular customers in the area will continue to receive information directly from T-Mobile regarding the migration of their wireless accounts and any actions they may need to take.
T-Mobile says customers will benefit from access to its nationwide 5G network, expanded coverage, and additional wireless services. The company is notifying customers individually when it is time to transfer their accounts, and most customers do not need to take immediate action until they receive those communications.
Depending on the device being used, some customers may receive a new SIM card or be instructed to activate an eSIM. Customers may also notice changes to billing statements, account management tools, and wireless plans as their accounts are transitioned to T-Mobile.
While T-Mobile now operates the wireless business acquired from UScellular, UScellular’s parent company retained ownership of certain wireless spectrum licenses and tower assets as part of a separate business structure.
Customers with questions about their service are encouraged to monitor communications from T-Mobile for updates on the timing of their account transition and any required steps.
