Every day, nearly half a million postal workers across the United States head out with one mission: making sure the mail reaches homes and businesses across the country. On July 1, National Postal Worker Day, communities are encouraged to recognize the dedication and hard work of the men and women who keep the nation’s mail moving.

Postal workers often face some of the toughest working conditions. From sweltering summer heat to freezing winter temperatures, heavy rain, sleet, and snow, they continue delivering letters, packages, and important documents six days a week. Many letter carriers walk between 4 and 8 miles each day while carrying a full load of mail to serve the communities they know so well.

Today, approximately 490,000 postal workers serve communities across the United States, delivering everything from birthday cards and bills to medications, business shipments, and online purchases.

The postal service also has its share of unusual history. When parcel delivery began in 1913, packages weighing up to 11 pounds could be mailed. One of the most famous stories from that era involved a young boy named James Beagle, who weighed just under the limit. His parents paid 15 cents to have him delivered by mail to his grandmother a few miles away. While a handful of children were briefly mailed during that period, the practice ended just over a year later when the Postmaster General officially prohibited it.

National Postal Worker Day is a reminder to thank the letter carriers and postal employees who work year-round to ensure mail arrives safely and on time. Whether it’s a simple wave, a kind word, or a heartfelt thank-you, taking a moment to recognize their service can make a difference.
