Charles Cody Barnett, 82, of Bloomfield, Iowa passed away on June 25, 2026, at the Comfort House in Pella, Iowa. He was born on August 9, 1943, in Reno, Nevada to Crane Wilbur and Janet Yvonne Dilliner Barnett. His family moved to Bloomfield in 1945, and he graduated from Davis County High School in 1961. He then attended Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville, Missouri, graduating in 1966, with a bachelor’s degree in education.
After college graduation, Cody taught at Collins Community Schools for two years before being drafted to the Army. He proudly served two years at Fort Bliss, Texas as an instructor in air defense. In 1971, Cody began teaching and coaching at Davis County Community Schools. Throughout his teaching career he served in many coaching roles for several different sports with girls high school golf and girls high school softball among his favorites. Cody owned and operated a sporting goods store in Bloomfield called Sport Shack, which he ran on the weekends. He was also a referee for basketball for 40 years. In 1998, Cody retired from teaching and coaching but kept working in sales with Image Sport in Des Moines and Something Unique in Denison, Iowa.
In 1966, Cody married Linda Hunt. Cody and Linda had two daughters, April and Monica. Linda passed away on January 11, 1983 after a lengthy illness. Cody later married longtime friend and fellow teacher/coach, Marty Shope in 1985. The couple enjoyed many happy years working alongside each other in Davis County. After retirement, they spent the winter in Arizona for many years. A few years ago, the couple purchased a place in Pella, Iowa to be closer to family.
Cody was a longtime member of the Bloomfield Country Club where he served on the board and a member of the Sunland Springs Golf Course in Mesa, Arizona where he served as a board member of the men’s club. He was a member of Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion, the Iowa Coaches Association, Iowa Athletic Director’s Association, the Iowa Girls Athletic Association, and the Iowa High School Athletic Association.
Cody enjoyed golfing, playing cards, having coffee with friends, and showing old cars. He was proud of the two holes-in-one in his golf career. The most enjoyable part of Cody’s busy and active life was spending time with his family; his wife, children, and grandchildren were the most important part of his life and he loved attending the various events of his children as they were growing up and later the grandchildren’s events.
He is survived by his wife, Marty; two daughters, April (Mike) Gruver of Pella, Iowa, Monica (Steve) Childs of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; and four grandchildren, Quinn Gruver, Drake Gruver, Caden Childs, Maci Childs.
He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Linda; and an infant brother.
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, July 2, 2026 at the IOOF Cemetery in Bloomfield with Pastor Don Naftz officiating. Military rites will be performed by Reed-Whisler Post #78 of the American Legion. Following the graveside service, a celebration of life will be held at the Bloomfield Country Club from 3-6:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials have been established to Pella Hospice and the Bloomfield Country Club. Wagler Funeral Home in Bloomfield is in charge of arrangements.
