An annual summer rodeo will go on hiatus this year, with intentions of coming back in 2027.

In a press release, the Greater Ottumwa Rodeo Committee announced the cancellation of the 2026 Greater Ottumwa Rodeo. The organization cited current economic conditions and widespread financial constraints made it impossible to produce the quality of event that residents and visitors have come to expect.

“Rising costs and tighter budgets across the region have impacted our ability to secure the level of production, talent, and services necessary to deliver a safe, entertaining, and professionally run rodeo experience,” the committee wrote. “Rather than present a scaled-back event that would not meet community standards or raise entry fees that would be prohibitive to our patrons’ budgets, the Committee has chosen to pause this year’s program to protect the long-term reputation and sustainability of the Greater Ottumwa Rodeo.”

The committee emphasized that the cancellation is a temporary pause. The press release also says the Committee remains fully committed to the Greater Ottumwa Rodeo and is actively pursuing new partnerships, sponsorships, and creative solutions to restore and enhance the event.
