The National Weather Service has issued a High Wind Watch for several south-central Iowa counties beginning later today and continuing through Friday morning.
The watch includes Warren, Marion, Mahaska, Lucas, Monroe, and Wapello counties, affecting communities such as Indianola, Pella, Oskaloosa, Chariton, Albia, Ottumwa, Knoxville, Carlisle, and Norwalk.
Forecasters say west winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour are expected, with gusts reaching up to 50 mph and possibly peaking near 60 mph at times. The strongest winds are expected from Thursday evening through early Friday morning.
These strong winds could knock down trees and power lines, which may lead to widespread power outages across the region. Travel could also become difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles such as trucks, vans, and SUVs.
Residents are encouraged to secure outdoor items, remain alert for changing weather conditions, and monitor updated forecasts and warnings as the system moves through the area.
The National Weather Service says the watch may be upgraded to a High Wind Warning if conditions continue to strengthen.
