Main Street Ottumwa is now accepting applications for the Hometown Heroes Veterans Banners Program, an annual
initiative that recognizes and honors individuals who are currently serving or have served in the United States Armed Forces and who have ties to the Ottumwa area.

The Hometown Heroes program is designed to show appreciation for local veterans, service members, and their families. Each custom banner features a photo of the honoree, along with their name, branch of service, and dates of military service. Banners are displayed on decorative light poles along Main Street, creating a visible and meaningful tribute in the heart of downtown.

Banners approved through this application cycle will be displayed beginning around Memorial Day 2026 and will remain up through Veterans Day 2026. They will be displayed again during the same period in 2027.

“This program is one of the most meaningful things we do downtown each year,” said Kris Patrick, Executive Director of Main Street Ottumwa. “As we approach America’s 250th anniversary in 2026, it feels especially important to take time to recognize the men and women from our own community who have served our country. These banners are a powerful reminder that our national history is made up of individual stories, families, and local service.”

The cost is $185 per banner, which covers two years of display, banner production, installation, and removal. A portion of the proceeds also supports the local Wapello County Veterans Affairs Department.

Applications are available online at www.mainstreetottumwa.com or in person at the Main Street Ottumwa office located at 334 E. Main Street. The deadline to submit an application is April 1, 2026, or until available banner spaces are filled.
