Grain storage gains attention as farmers wait out depressed markets

Farmers are relying on grain storage as markets remain depressed.

Kent Craighton with Sukup Manufacturing says interest in grain storage and handling equipment is high despite low commodity prices.

“It’s critical for our customers to be profitable. For us to stay in business, they have to stay in business, So we look at this from two different aspects, number one is providing them a quality, valued piece of equipment that is going to bring them some profitability (by) taking advantage of the marketing and blending of grain, and all that kind of stuff when they have on-farm storage.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the Iowa Ag Expo in Des Moines Wednesday, he said conditioning is the other aspect.

Craighton points out historically the best time to sell corn is between April and June.

“And your best basis months are normally July and August. So if you understand marketing and they can play the games with that, there are ways they can make money and be more profitable than at harvest.”
