New checkoff-funded research is showcasing the importance of seed oils to the U.S. food supply chain.

Michigan farmer Carla Schultz says seed oils are essential to a balanced diet.

“We have to go back to the science research claims,” she says. “We find that it’s heart healthy. We find that it’s good to use in everyday cooking. We also know that soybean oil has unsaturated fatty acids, which are also good for human health.”

Carson Fort with the American Soybean Association says maintaining consumer access helps support food affordability and consumer choice.

“Soybean oil is a domestic product, which helps keep costs down,” he says. “Getting rid of nearly a third of all seed oil consumption would be pretty significant both from an economic standpoint and the health side. You can’t just replace seed oils.”

Schultz says the checkoff continues to study the further impacts of seed oils on the ag industry and help strengthen demand for soybean producers.

Fort and Schultz made their comments during a recent USB webinar.
