What began as a report of suspicious activity at a vacant Farmington home ended with a man in custody and facing multiple charges, according to Van Buren County officials.
Van Buren County deputies responded to a call of suspicious activity in Farmington on the afternoon of December 11, 2025. At around 2:30 p.m., deputies were sent to the 300 block of North Second Street after a resident reported seeing a man trespassing at a vacant home.
When deputies arrived, they spoke with the reporting party, who provided a description of the individual she had seen on the property. During the investigation, deputies discovered that a window had been broken out of the garage at the residence.
A short time later, deputies located a suspect at a nearby home on B Street. The individual was taken into custody without any issues.
Authorities identified the suspect as 50-year-old Dustan R. Smith of Croton. Smith was charged fifth-degree criminal mischief. He remains in custody while awaiting his initial court appearance.
