A lightning strike hit the old Lincoln Elementary School building in Oskaloosa on Thursday afternoon, prompting precautionary evacuations in the surrounding neighborhood.
Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Emergency crews responded quickly, and several nearby residents were asked to evacuate while officials assessed the scene for fire risk or structural damage.
The building, which has not been in use for several years, did sustain some damage, though no ongoing hazards have been identified.
Firefighters and first responders remained on site into the evening as a safety measure. Residents were allowed to return to their homes later Thursday evening.
