Maxine Rae Richwalski, 91, of Norwalk and formerly of Ottumwa died at 4:35 a.m. July 3, 2025 at Edencrest Assisted Living in Norwalk.
She was born January 9, 1934 to Ray Walter and Marjorie Grissom Hedlund. She grew up on the family farm, where she developed a lifelong love for the outdoors and enjoyed working with horses. Maxine graduated from Farson High School where she played basketball. She later married Melvin Garber in May, 1952. They later divorced and he preceded her in death March 21, 2012.
Maxine worked at McAninch Corp, eventually becoming the head of the computer department; a role she was proud of. A longtime member of the Evangelical United Brethren Church, Maxine was known for her love of dancing, music—especially the accordion—and time outside. She also enjoyed organizing and hosting garage sales, which she did often over the years. Maxine found joy in simple pleasures throughout her life.
Surviving are her children, Connie Barden of Waukee, Rodney Garber of Runnells and Susan (Steven) Burt of Norwalk, 7 grandchildren, Tony (Toni) Alden, Lisa (Scott) Rubendall, Nikki (Mike) Leeper, Bobbi Barden, Nicole (Brent) Potter, Heather Garber and Jessica (Justin) Malloy; 17 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great grandson; and sister, Ruthie Hathaway of Lebanon, MO.
She was preceded in death by her parents; granddaughter, Cheryl Barden; sister, Pauline Spears; and son-in-law, Jack Barden.
Her body has been cremated. Graveside services and inurnment will be 1:30 p.m. Monday, July 7th at Memorial Lawn Cemetery in Ottumwa with Pastor Rod Nelson officiating.
