Citing concerns for community safety, the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC) announced the cancellation of this year’s VIVA Ottumwa Latino Festival via social media earlier this week.
In a post from the VIVA Ottumwa Latino Festival Facebook page, the statement says in part:
“This decision was made with our community’s safety and well-being in mind. Like many across the country, we are navigating a time of uncertainty that has deeply impacted vulnerable community members. We believe it’s our responsibility to act with care and prioritize the peace of mind of those we serve.”
VIVA Ottumwa is the second southeast Iowa Latino festival to be canceled recently. Two weeks ago, Latinos for Washington, Inc. announced that their annual Festival Latino of Washington would not be held this year.
