Rex Irwin, a dedicated and loyal gentleman known for his quick wit and endless humor, passed away on March 7, 2025, shortly before his 87th birthday.

Born in Plano, IA on March 17, 1938 to Hershel and Leone (Wells) Irwin. Rex lived most of his life in Centerville, Iowa. He graduated in 1957 from Centerville High School.

He married Carole Todey on August 1, 1959. He was a self-made man, who owned and drove his truck across the entirety of the United States. His commitment to his work was unparalleled, and he was admired for his tireless work ethic. Throughout his career, Rex had the opportunity to witness some of the country’s most stunning landscapes, a privilege he cherished. Rex was a man of many talents. Besides his professional endeavors, he also operated heavy equipment and participated in the construction of the Rathbun Lake. He was always on the move, constantly working on something, and his family fondly referred to him as a “professional bullshitter.” He had a knack for keeping himself busy, whether it was tinkering with something at home or riding his Recumbent Trike all around town. Upon retirement, he and his loving wife Carole enjoyed their time as snowbirds, traveling in their 5th wheel. Despite his many interests and activities, what mattered most to Rex was his family. His loyalty and dedication to his loved ones were his most enduring qualities.

He is survived by his wife, Carole; children, Kim (Joel) Baker, Joan (Bob) Mattly, Mitch Iriwn, Deb Irwin; grandchildren, Jeremy (Krista) Cortesio, Danielle Baker, Melissa Baker, Sarah Breese and Wes, Lindsay Breese and Mike, Jacob Breese and Lisa, Jarrett Mattly and Josie, Clayton Irwin, Anissa Irwin, Bradley Irwin, Amanda Patrick, Ashley Patrick; 16 great grandchildren, and 5 great great grandchildren; one brother, Vern Irwin; sisters-in-law, Elaine Pasa, Helen Irwin.
