Rita Ann Hartness, a compassionate and creative soul, passed away on January 25, 2025. Born on February 20, 1960, in Centerville, Iowa, Rita spent her life dedicated to the service of others. She had a unique talent for understanding people and their needs, and her empathetic nature made her a natural in her chosen profession.
As a physical therapist, she touched countless lives, helping athletes reach their peak performance, and providing relief to those suffering from stress and chronic pain.
Growing up in Centerville, Rita’s talents shone brightly in many different capacities. In high school, she was valedictorian of the class of 1978, as well as first chair clarinet in band and president of the National Honor Society. Her skills were not just limited to schoolwork, as she excelled in running cross country and playing golf as well. Her drive and determination did not stop in high school, as Rita graduated from the University of Iowa with a master’s degree in physical therapy.
She moved to Phoenix, Arizona, and worked as a self-employed contractor in a rehabilitation clinic, specializing in sports performance. Her hard work and dedication led her to present her published research at several conventions, seminars, and workshops.
She retired early to return to her hometown of Centerville, Iowa, where she spent her time caring for her aging parents. The same compassion and empathy that made her an exceptional physical therapist also made her a devoted daughter. But Rita was not all work. She was also a woman of many talents and interests. She loved hiking, practicing yoga, reading and even dabbled in acting. Her creativity and adventurous spirit were an inspiration to all who knew her. She was a bright light in the lives of her friends, family, and patients, and she will be deeply missed.
Rita is survived by her cousins, Richard and Patricia Ortega and Kerry Ortega, and her aunt, Nancy LaPaglia. She is preceded in death by her loving parents, Howard Edward Hartness and Mary Ann (LaPaglia) Hartness. Rita was never married, but her love for people and her commitment to helping others defined her life.
Rita has been cremated with no planned services per her wishes. We invite all who knew Rita to share their memories of her and upload photos to the memorial page. Her legacy will live on in the hearts and minds of those she touched.
