Greater Ottumwa Partners in Progress is proud to announce the recipient of the 2024 Gene Schultz Community Service Award: Bill Ansley. This prestigious award, established in memory of Gene Schultz by his close friends Charlie Barnett and Dick Ramsayer, with the blessing of Gene’s widow Rose and his late parents Marian and Rich, continues to honor individuals who exemplify outstanding volunteer service in the Ottumwa community.
Since 1993, the Gene Schultz Community Service Award has been presented annually to individuals whose volunteerism mirrors Gene’s dedication to civic engagement. Nominations are accepted each October, and the award is given to someone whose service reflects Gene’s values of community pride, selflessness, and a lasting impact on the lives of others.
Criteria for Selection Include:
- Contributing to the betterment of their workplace, church, community, and family
- Active participation in civic activities
- Pride in the Ottumwa community
- Enthusiasm for making a difference
- Demonstrating leadership as both a worker and an organizer
- Promoting the interests of Ottumwa as a whole
- A focus on community service without selfish motivation
- Giving recognition and credit to others
- This year’s recipient, Bill Ansley, a lifelong Ottumwa resident and retiree from UPS, has shown exceptional commitment to the community. His volunteer efforts have made a significant impact on various facets of the community, most notably his longstanding work organizing the “Holiday Nights N’ Lights” event, a beloved 42-day celebration in Greater Ottumwa Park during the holiday season.
