Security workers at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach are threatening to strike if a new contract agreement is not reached this week.
Although the union represents a relatively small portion of the overall port workforce, a work stoppage could affect other port operations. Unionized employees, including longshoremen and clerks, may decline to cross picket lines, potentially disrupting shipping activity.
U.S. Meat Export Federation President and CEO Dan Halstrom said the Los Angeles and Long Beach port complex plays an important role in the transportation of U.S. beef and pork exports.
Halstrom also noted that shipments scheduled to leave through the Port of Oakland could experience delays if congestion increases at Southern California ports.
The potential impact on shipping schedules will depend on whether an agreement is reached and whether a strike occurs.
