LIHEAP Applications Now Open To Help Iowans With Winter Heating Costs

As temperatures begin to cool across Iowa, a program designed to help eligible households with winter heating expenses is now accepting applications.

The Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) is accepting applications through April 2027. Assistance is available to qualifying homeowners and renters, with applications processed on a first-come, first-served basis.

LIHEAP is a federally funded program administered through the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The program helps eligible low-income households manage the cost of home heating through a one-time financial benefit, which is typically applied as a credit to the household’s heating utility bill.

To qualify, household income must be at or below 200% of the 2025 federal poverty guidelines. For a family of four, that means an annual gross household income of $64,300 or less.

Both homeowners and renters may apply if they meet the program’s eligibility requirements.

Iowans interested in applying or learning more about eligibility requirements can find additional information through the HACAP Energy Assistance Program.

Applications and program information are available online at:

Eligible households are encouraged to apply early, as assistance is provided on a first-come, first-served basis.
