Unofficial results show 56% of Iowa voters have approved an amendment to Iowa’s constitution that will restrict the legislature’s ability to raise income taxes.
It means a two-thirds supermajority of the Iowa House and the Iowa Senate will have to approve any future increase in Iowa’s personal income tax or the state’s corporate income tax. That would be 67 of 100 House members and and 34 of the 50 state senators.
Iowa joins 16 states, including California, that have some sort of supermajority requirement for raising taxes.
Iowans for Tax Relief spent a million dollars on a campaign that encouraged Iowa voters to approve the amendment. Critics say the restriction means legislators will turn to raising other taxes, like the sales tax, to fill gaps in the state budget.
Election results are considered unofficial until county boards of supervisors certify election results. Tuesday is the deadline for county supervisors to make those certifications.
