As Halloween approaches, we look back at one of the most destructive fires in Ottumwa’s early history.

On October 30, 1868, a fire broke out in downtown Ottumwa, threatening businesses and buildings in the growing community. According to historical accounts, the fire was discovered around 1 a.m. at Charles Betts’ hat and cap store.

The blaze quickly spread, destroying 22 buildings in the heart of downtown Ottumwa. The estimated losses reached approximately $400,000, a staggering amount of money for the time.

The fire left a significant mark on the community and raised questions about what caused the disaster. Historical accounts offered differing explanations. Some suspected the fire had been deliberately set, while another account suggested it may have started accidentally.

Although the Great Ottumwa Fire was not a paranormal event, its timing just one day before Halloween makes it a fitting subject for a seasonal look into the city’s past.

More than 150 years later, the fire remains a reminder of the dangers faced by early businesses and communities before modern firefighting equipment and fire-prevention systems were widely available.

This Halloween season, the story of the Great Ottumwa Fire offers a glimpse into a dramatic chapter of local history and the challenges faced by those who helped build the community we know today.
