Iowa State University Extension and Outreach has released its 2027 Garden Calendar, “Thyme for Herbs.” Now in its 49th year of production, the calendar is available for purchase on the ISU Extension Store.

Monthly pages list gardening tasks timed to Iowa’s seasons, such as ordering seeds in January, conducting a soil test in March and planting spring-flowering bulbs in October. The calendar also includes holidays, journal pages, a garden layout grid and a plant wish list.

This year’s theme highlights 12 herbs, one per month, including thyme, basil, lavender, rosemary and mint. Each month’s page includes a QR code linking to information on growing and caring for that herb.

Aaron Steil, consumer horticulture extension specialist at Iowa State and co-author of the calendar, said herbs’ wide appeal influenced this year’s theme.

“Herbs are beautiful, easy to grow and connect gardening with cooking and wellness,” Steil said. “They can be grown in vegetable gardens, flower beds, containers and even indoors, making them accessible to gardeners regardless of their available space. Many herbs provide season-long harvests while attracting pollinators and adding fragrance, texture and beauty to the landscape.”

The 2027 Garden Calendar is available for $10 on the ISU Extension Store. Iowa residents can also contact their ISU Extension and Outreach county office for availability.
