The Reminisce Society will host its next meeting on Tuesday, October 27, at 10 a.m. at the Knights of Columbus Hall in Ottumwa.
This month’s program, “Wonders of Buxton,” will be presented by Anne Harris Carter and the African American Museum of Iowa.
The program will take participants back to the early 1900s to explore Buxton, Iowa, a historic coal-mining community once described as “the black man’s utopia in Iowa.”
Although Buxton existed for only about two decades at the turn of the 20th century, it became one of the few communities in Iowa history where African Americans made up the majority of the population. The presentation will highlight the town’s unique history and its significance in Iowa’s past.
The Reminisce Society’s programs are free and open to everyone.
