The proposed Wapello County Jail project would expand the existing facility while making renovations to address inmate housing capacity, intake procedures, daily operations, support areas and site needs.
According to information provided about the proposal, the project is not intended to replace the entire jail with a completely new facility. Instead, it would combine an addition to the current building with improvements to the existing structure.
The primary reason for the proposed project is limited inmate housing capacity and the ongoing expense of transporting and housing overflow inmates in other counties. The proposed addition would provide additional space for inmate housing, while renovations would address other operational needs within the current facility.
The project also includes improvements to intake areas, support spaces and the jail site to help meet the facility’s operational requirements.
