A felon living in a local halfway house is in more legal trouble after police say he attempted to escape the facility earlier this month.
Jaryelle Mack of Ottumwa, 21, was charged with escape from custody – felon, a Class D felony, and interference with corrections official – assault, an aggravated misdemeanor.
On October 6th, authorities say a High Risk Unit Officer met with Mack in the dining room of the Ottumwa Residential Facility to inform Mack that there was an active warrant for his arrest. Mack pleaded guilty to third-degree burglary, a Class D felony, in a 2024 case in Des Moines County.
Mack allegedly took off running, removed his GPS ankle bracelet, and exited the front door of the building. The criminal complaint states Mack was found hiding next to civilians across the street from the facility.
Mack ran away again and was eventually caught, according to court documents. Mack allegedly refused to put his hands behind his back during his arrest.
Mack is currently housed in the Wapello County Jail where he is being held on a $6,000 bond. He is scheduled to be arraigned on November 4th.
