Electric bicycles and other motorized vehicles were the focus of discussion during a recent Ottumwa City Council special meeting as city officials consider how to address safety concerns while maintaining access to alternative transportation.
According to the City of Ottumwa, no policy has been established at this time. Officials shared information about the different classifications of electric bicycles and explained that some vehicles commonly referred to as e-bikes may fall into other categories.
To help residents better understand the differences, the city has created an online information page featuring vehicle classifications, an Iowa Department of Transportation brochure and safety tips.
Residents can access the information by visiting www.ottumwa.us/ebikes.
The city’s Public Safety Advisory Committee will continue working with city departments to develop a policy that provides guidance for residents and addresses safety concerns without unnecessarily limiting the benefits of electric bicycles and similar transportation options.
Additional information about any proposed policy changes may be provided as the city continues its review.
