George Hunt, 73, of Williamsburg and formerly of North English and Oskaloosa, passed away Wednesday, October 14, 2026, at Highland Ridge Care Center.

George Duane Hunt, son of George Keith and Norma Jean (Myers) Hunt, was born October 19, 1952, in Oskaloosa, Iowa. He grew up in the surrounding areas of Oskaloosa and graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1970. He continued his education at Iowa State University, earning a Bachelor’s in Farm Operation and Animal Science in 1975. On June 20, 1975, he was united in marriage to Sheila Rae Littlejohn at the Central Reformed Church in Oskaloosa. They made their home on a farm west of Oskaloosa, and George farmed with his dad. He also worked at Wake’s Feed Company. In 1987, the family moved to the Maquoketa area, where the U.S.D.A. employed George as a loan officer. In 1988, the family moved to an acreage near North English, where he continued to work for the U.S.D.A. until his retirement in 2017. In 2023, George and Sheila moved to Highland Ridge, a retirement community in Williamsburg.

George was a 4-H Club Leader, Beef Superintendent, 4-H Committee Member, Iowa County 4-H Foundation Director, Iowa County Extension Council Member, and member of the Iowa County Fair Board; he was ultimately inducted into the Iowa 4-H Hall of Fame in 2015 for his dedicated work with kids and 4-H.

If he wasn’t doing things with 4-H, you could find him coaching girls’ softball in North English or enjoying the simple pleasures of everyday life—whether that was watching his favorite westerns, checking on his cows, or proudly cheering on his kids and grandkids as they showed bunnies and cattle. George always had an orneriness to him that made people laugh, and he knew no strangers. He loved lighting up the countryside during the Christmas season with festive displays, and though he always claimed he didn’t like cats, you would never catch him walking around the farm without a loyal herd trailing right behind him. George also enjoyed riding his motorcycle, with Sheila on the back, of course.

His family includes his wife, Sheila; his children: Melissa Hunt of Cedar Rapids; Kristin (Dion) Schminke of Parnell; and Devin (Holly) Hunt of North English; three grandchildren: Maci and Jack Hunt; and Grayson Schminke, who preceded him in death when he was five; his grand pups, Milo and Lane; his sister, Judy Stone; a sister-in-law, Sherry (Norman) Veldhuizen; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
George was also preceded in death by his parents, George Keith and Norma Jean Hunt, and his in-laws, Clyde and Fern Littlejohn.
Funeral Services for George will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, October 19, 2026, at Langkamp Funeral Chapel, with Rev. Jon Nelson of Central Church officiating. The burial will be at Bluff Creek Cemetery. Visitation will begin after 11 a.m. on Sunday at Langkamp Funeral Chapel; the family will greet visitors from 4-6 p.m. Memorial contributions can be made to Amazin’ Grayson Foundation or the Iowa County Fair.
