Fire Prevention Week is being observed October 4-10, 2026, with an important reminder for families to take a closer look at fire safety in their homes.

This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety: Safe Charging Is a Superpower,” focuses on the safe use of rechargeable batteries and electronic devices.

With phones, tablets, laptops, e-bikes, scooters and other battery-powered devices becoming part of everyday life, it is important to charge them safely. Damaged batteries, improper chargers and charging devices on or near flammable materials can increase the risk of a fire.

Fire safety officials encourage residents to follow a few simple precautions:

  • Use the charger that came with the device or one approved by the manufacturer.
  • Never use a charging cord or battery that is damaged, swollen or showing signs of overheating.
  • Charge devices on a hard, flat surface away from beds, couches and other materials that can catch fire.
  • Do not cover charging devices while they are charging.
  • Unplug chargers when the device is fully charged or when they are not being used.
  • Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for using and charging rechargeable batteries.

Fire Prevention Week is also a good time to make sure your home has working smoke alarms on every level and outside sleeping areas. Families should also review their fire escape plan and make sure everyone knows two ways out of each room when possible.

A few simple safety steps can help prevent a devastating fire. This Fire Prevention Week, charge into fire safety and make safe charging a superpower.
