Birmingham Boil Water Advisory Lifted; Water Safe for Consumption

The City of Birmingham in Van Buren County has lifted the boil water advisory that was in effect for city water customers, effective immediately as of Wednesday, October 7th, according to a notice from the city.

As Ottumwa Radio previously reported, the boil order went into effect following a temporary water service shutoff on Monday, October 5th for critical sewer system repairs. The advisory was originally expected to remain in effect through Thursday, October 8th, pending required water quality testing — but water quality testing came back clear a day ahead of schedule, allowing the city to lift the advisory on Wednesday. The public water supply meets all state and federal safety standards and is safe for drinking, cooking, and general use.

Residents are recommended to take a few steps following the lifted advisory. Water lines should be flushed by running cold water faucets for one to two minutes to clear household plumbing. Any ice made during the boil order should be discarded, and ice makers should be allowed to make and dump a couple of batches before use. Those with inline water filters or water softeners should consider replacing or flushing filter cartridges according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

Those with questions or who experience unusual water clarity issues after flushing can contact Birmingham City Hall at 319-498-4296.
